This CD recording is one of two that came out of Red Rock recording studio. We did a marathon of two CDs worth of music that night. It was flowing like playing a gig; that's the advantage of playing together a long time. I have been very lucky that way to have a consistent stream of great musicians to make music with over the last fifteen years which is a treasure these days. The result of this consistency is not only the obvious tightness but the depth of interaction. If someone asks me to describe the music of my quartet, they are surely looking for a label. A label that would communicate to them an understanding and good idea of our music's sound. But this is impossible, due to the very nature of our interactive playing. And, if I said interactive playing, one could get the impression of free form. We have developed an egoless environment to create and compose into. Another great thing about this is also our consistency in getting together not being based on upcoming gigs. We come together as artists to create music.
Expectation is a limitation in listening to music. Participation seems to be a need for the public much like the desire for familiarity. This, although valid, is NOT the only pleasure to be extracted from music. Changing our listening habbits allows music to take us on our own personal journey which is both inspiring and rewarding. So, I use the word "impressionistic" to describe our music. It is open, sensitive, colorful, playful, and in the moment; never to be judged; just experienced.
